Even if a film like this has amazing photo-realistic effects, it simply isn't complete if it lacks clear facial expressions and has no original story. While I do like that they got James Earl Jones back for Mufasa, this remake was simply unneccessary. Any remake of the original animated Lion King is destined to be soulless.

I seem to be one of the few people who enjoyed this remake nearly as much as I did the original. I'm also not a big fan of the Jungle Book remake but I think that's because I find somethings in it cringy. Of course all these remakes are cash grabs there's no other reason for it, that or they're too lazy to come up with something new. Fact of the matter is they have a list of animated films they know did well or not and they know damn well that people are going to watch it no matter what just to see what it's like if nothing else.

I liked the little bits they added like Timon's "be our guest" bit and quite enjoyed the extended "the lion sleeps tonight song". Agree though that performances in terms of expression wasn't as good as the original and this is just something that is a trade off depending on what you want to achieve. I feel though that no matter what approach they took they'd be slated for it. Let's say they did a Jungle Book like remake and changed the story a fair bit really making it their own. Then you get people saying it's nothing like the original bit like what happened with Dumbo. Then let's say they did more facial expressions and mouth movements, then you get people slating that the facial expressions wouldn't really happen though they still could have done more with the expressions of animals in other ways such as more body language.

I also wonder if people don't feel the emotion as much because they all ready know what happens and what to expect and maybe we're a bit biased towards it because we've already seen the original which we all love. But what if they had come out with the remake as the original in 1994, would the reviews be the same not having something to compare it to?

I actually forgot about this movie's existed.

I’m happy I didn’t pay to see this. Looks amazing but souless. Even the Aladdin remake had more originality than this.

AGREED 💯

They made a huge mistake by not adding facial emotion and expressions to the characters. I’m not saying they had to be huge and overly expressive, but they needed a hint of something. Relying on the voices to indicate the emotions wasn’t enough.

The big difference between animated & photorealistic movies is the facial expression. That's why... =)

I agree, the lion king is too classic to remake, like star wars, I mean I have seen the animated movie so many times and will continue to watch it and laugh and cry and yell at the screen, a remake was greatly unnecessary.

I only hired the movie for my dog. I’m serious. My dog loves animal movies.

This movie is garbage and so far the worst I've seen in 2019

You know this movie is disrespectful to its source material when animators of the original film and even Elton John (one of the greatest musicians ever) have criticized this soulless cash cow remake.

This movie is CRAP... nothing more than a cashcow! The songs are HORRIBLE and not even Beyoncé can save this trainreck

I reckon 1994 lion king audio with the 2019 lion kings visual would have been sooooooooo much better, like a full remaster not a remake. I wasnt a fan of beyonce singing of circle of life. It really sucked for me. Matter of fact even all the talking really sucked. Its like there was no emotion. And most of the songs just irritated me. They do the whole, hold a single note for a long time. Like hakuna matataaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaa

Although it was brief and could've been easily missed by most upon first viewing this film, they did hint at how scar got his scar near the beginning of the film. Mufasa roars at him and says "Is that a challenge"?! And scars response is altered from the original by adding one word. He responds with "I wouldnt dream of challenging you... Again". Its not a major change, but i believe this remake is not nearly as emotionless as people make it out to be. I admit its not anywhere close to the original but i do believe it did its job well enough to be praised on as its own work. From what I've experienced, the more you compare remakes to their original counterparts instead of focusing on only the remake you are watching, the less likely you are to enjoy that remake. I just dont compare any movie to its source material until ive watched the movie at least 3 to 5 times, judging it on its own. I did it for this movie and Detective Pikachu. For a better example, I even did this with Dragonball Evolution. Even though i absolutely hated it. And it even made THAT abomination more enjoyable. I just dont compare.

Lions rule the African savanna in The Lion King, which welcomes Donald Glover (Atlanta, Solo: A Star Wars Story) as future king Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (Dreamgirls, Lemonade visual album) as Simba’s friend-turned-love interest Nala, and James Earl Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Field of Dreams) as Simba’s wise and loving father, Mufasa, reprising his iconic performance from Disney’s 1994 animated classic. Chiwetel Ejiofor (Twelve Years a Slave, Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange) was called on to portray Simba’s villainous uncle Scar, and Alfre Woodard (Juanita, Marvel’s Luke Cage) portrays Simba’s no-nonsense mother, Sarabi. JD McCrary (OWN’s Tyler Perry’s The Paynes, Apple’s Vital Signs) fills the shoes of Young Simba, a confident cub who can’t wait to be king, and Shahadi Wright Joseph (NBC’s Hairspray Live, Broadway’s The Lion King) brings tough cub Young Nala to life.

Every kingdom comes with a trustworthy advisor or two. John Kani (Coriolanus, Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War) was cast as the wise baboon Rafiki, and John Oliver (HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) was tapped as hornbill Zazu, Mufasa’s loyal confidant. When Simba goes into exile, he relies on two newfound friends—Seth Rogen (Sausage Party, Neighbors) lends his comedic chops to naïve warthog Pumbaa, and Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street, FX’s American Horror Story) joins the cast as know-it-all meerkat Timon.

From Disney Live Action, director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. The all-star cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Billy Eichner as Timon and Seth Rogen as Pumbaa. Utilizing pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring treasured characters to life in a whole new way, “The Lion King” roars into cinemas Summer 2019.
