In HBO’s epic Game of Thrones based on George R.R. Martin’s sweeping Song of Fire and Ice series, there isn’t really anyone who’s had an easy time. Even Samwell Tarly, the bookish friend to Jon Snow who hasn’t done anything to anybody has had his own troubles. It’d be a crowded field of people competing for the role of who had it worse, with Sansa Stark being passed from one abusive partner to another or her sister Arya being on the run and under the care of someone trying to ransom her. Even the mad queen Cersei had her own issues stemming from using the church to rid herself of political enemies, but Theon Greyjoy, ward of the Starks and heir to the Iron Isles, has some claim to having had it pretty bad.

From his run ins with the sadistic Ramsay Snow/Bolton, who turned him into Reek to his spotty time pirating the high seas, the once cocky Theon became notably less cocky. Both literally and figuratively. His path from righteous to nefarious to cowardly and back to righteous again has been rough on the man split between two homelands and some of the details that explain where he came from might have been lost. Let’s look at the story of Theon and how he went from jerk to victim to hero in time for the ongoing conclusion of the massive fantasy series.
