At the invitation of the South Australian Government, Carnegie Mellon opened its campus in Adelaide in 2006. Located in the International University Precinct situated in the heritage-listed Torrens Building in Victoria Square, it was the first international university to establish in Australia.

Degrees are granted by Carnegie Mellon University. Carnegie Mellon and all of its degree programs, including those offered in Australia, are accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education of the United States.
A Master's degree earned at the Carnegie Mellon University Australia receives dual recognition, since it meets the requirements for a Master's degree in both the United States and Australia.
The courses offered are also accredited by the Minister of Further Education, Employment, Science and Training of the State of South Australia, and on the CRICOS Register of providers of Educational Services for Overseas students (CRICOS Provider 02696B).
