The Decline of Redbox...What Happened? PetSmart vs. Petco 5 months ago   13:16

Company Man
There's a great story behind Redbox. They've become somewhat of a household name and are now the #1 source of DVD and Blu-Ray rentals. Yet, over the last few years they've experienced a noticeable decline. This video takes a look at their rise and possible fall while attempting to provide reasoning behind it.

I think they should make video games their main focus. I know with older people, they preferred physical rental places, and it seems if they don’t have that, the connivence or renting on Amazon compared to going out, getting the disc (which fewer people have blu ray players, and it’ll be even more true if future consoles remove their disc drive), putting it in, returning it not have more of a fee and all that just isn’t worth it when rentals are a click away.

However, video games don’t have a way to be rented like movies. They should focus on that, and keep them reasonably priced. Renting Mega Man 11 at $8 for 3 days is not worth it, and you might as well buy it at that point (because it was a $20 release, right?). So, buy big, partner with GameStop, maybe use used games as rentals to lower costs, and go from there.

Hell, that’s two declining companies in one go.

DVDs and physical media are going the way of the Dodo! Just a fact Jack, lol. Of course my own personal usage has declined because the quality, topics, and the general increasingly poor and uninteresting movies available at Red Box has combined with You Tube to cause me to all but stop using the service.

I used to go to Blockbuster all the time. I would often rent 3 movies at the same time and only have time to watch 1 or 2. Then if I decided to keep the movies another day I had to pay their late fees. Either I paid the late fee or I just didn't watch the movies I had rented. Often I would just return them without even watching them. When Blockbuster finally went out business I had no choice but to find other ways of renting movies. With Blockbuster and Redbox the worst part is having to physically return the movies. I prefer to rent movies from streaming services because I don't have to return them or be charged a late fee. There was a time I had to see every new movie that came out. I couldn't wait to go to the theater to see the latest movie. Now I have found that there are very few movies I am even interested in. Most are directed toward 20 or 30 year olds. I can't relate to what a 20 year old thinks is interesting so I have to rent old movies that I really do enjoy and streaming rental is the best choice for me.

Blockbuster on friday night was lit. It had such a great atmosphere

Sometimes these redboxes are out of order and you cant even return it to the place you rented it from and thats a real hassle especially when you dont own a vehicle to drive to another location to return it

While specific formats end up going away, physical media will not, at least not entirely. US internet services are expensive for what we get, especially as compared to the rest of the world. It's not always reliable, and downed service can totally screw up movie night. Having the media in hand able to use at any time without fear of a service screwing up (aside from electricity, but if that's down, video services will be too). Unless or until we get cheaper faster internet more reliably and completely ubiquitous, physical media will have a place.

You can pirate/stream movies online for free when they are released on disc. Its hard for internet providers to punish streamers even w/o a VPN like you would need for torrents. BUT I wouldnt mind renting a UHD Dolby Vision disc due to the fact these sites cant provide that quality for free and VUDU takes forever to let you rent the Dolby Vision version.

Everyone doesn't have internet.. Physical media won't go away

you're dumb, they're not going anywhere.

what i think is a reason redbox is declining is because of being able to rent movies on demand on cable definetely in my family like i remember when i was younger we'd be at the store and rent a movie for the night from redbox but now if we want to rent a movie we just do it with like 3 clicks on demand

Lol there is a bunch near my house
Ramey Lewis
I stopped renting from Redbox when they raised the prices above a dollar.

I think they should focus on video games and let DVDs die

The way you say I'd like to hear what you have to say is not convincing at all
