How to Replace a Transmission (Full DIY Guide) The Coolest Transmission You've Never 3 months ago   28:24

Transmission removal, replacement, and installation. Learn how to remove a transmission so you can replace your clutch or flywheel, or so you can rebuild your transmission and install a new one in your car or truck.

In this video I show you the 10 simple steps on how to replace a transmission. I am doing this on a rear wheel drive 98 Mustang but the process is very similar on other rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, and even automatic cars and trucks. Each detailed step will allow you to learn how to remove a transmission yourself so you can replace a clutch, flywheel, rear main seal, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, or just swap transmissions.

To answer the most common questions in the comments section:
1.) Quality videos like this take a lot of time to produce. This and the next took me over 300hrs.
2.) Follow me on Instagram "ChrisFixit" for daily updates and tips and tricks.
3.) The exhaust on the car is the performance exhaust, just used on the track.
4.) The speedometer is fine... it spun all the way around at the last drift event and I havent had a chance to take the gauge cluster out and push it back to the other side of the peg.
5.) The other red Mustang is from this video:

Hey Chris, how do you jack up the rear of your car so high. I don't want to use the diff cover to do it but I can find no other way to work under the car. I use torque box on one side to jack it, place jackstand under the axle tube, but the body lowers down with the jack, great for working on wheels, brakes, suspension...not so great for exhaust, diff work. A response will be really appreciated. Thanks.
After you replace the transmission, how long should the vehicle last?
why do you disconnect the negative battery cord and not the positive

Super video! I do a question, though:

1)Are the shift linkages much different to set up? The vehicle I'm working on is an automatic with a column shifter. It was removed before I bought the car so I don't know how the removed it.

I've got a Q-Code 428ci 1967 Ford Thunderbird I'm learning on/restoring, and the transmission (Ford C6) needs replaced. I hardly have any idea where to start. Any help would be tremendously appreciated!

(EDIT): I wasn't quite done with the video when I wrote this, I originally had something in here about torque converters but you mentioned it at the end. Only question now is about the shift linkage!

He farted 12:49. On a serious note I love these videos and his channel. He makes me feel like I can do it and attack the transmission swap. Thanks to chrisfix for your videos training.

Hey chris, very nice video. I was wondering how did you learn to be a mechanic? I am really interested in the auto mechanic field but don’t know anything about mechanics at the moment. at a somewhat old age (25) what would be the best way I start? Would you recommend books? If so which ones? If anyone else can suggest anything thank you very much.

When I was 16, I thought I had designed something that would be revolutionary, turns out (heh) I was not only wrong about that, but also wasn't the first guy to have that idea. I wish I still had my original build to show you guys, but since I didn't I went and designed another one, but better!
